Autumn has set in and so has the humidity, which brings its share of problems. Among them is dermatophilosis, commonly known as “mud scab”.

WHAT IS IT?
The “Dermatophilus congolensis” is a bacterium that grows particularly in humid and muddy environments, we frequently encounter it in autumn/winter. It is lodged in the epidermis and hair follicles, and can persist for up to 2 years! The bacteria develops in our horses when there is a skin abrasion caused by:
– amalgamated hairs
– improper drying
– rubbing
– Exposure to too much humidity
– a lack of hygiene in the box
– in summer: photosensitization, sand, etc.

SYMPTOMS
Frequently observed on the pastern, back, rump and withers, mud mange is a dermatosis generally recognizable by its scabs. Can take the appearance of a simple irritation at first (pink, sensitive and hot skin), multiple small scabs can then evolve and become thick and oozing, cracks or even sores. Very painful for the horse, an appropriate treatment is necessary to prevent any superinfection, inflammation, lameness, etc.

WHAT TO DO?
The first treatment to adopt is prevention: avoid any situation conducive to the development of the bacteria. When mud scab is present, after identifying the cause and keeping the horse away from it, an appropriate treatment must be implemented:
– Wash the problem area to remove mud and dry it carefully. You can trim the long hairs so that they don’t retain moisture.
– Disinfect the area in severe cases
– Apply our DERMI’ CALM balm to the area in question 1 to 2 times a day at first, then gradually space out the applications.
– Do not remove the scabs, they will come off on their own gradually.
– Be accompanied by a veterinarian, who will judge if antibiotic treatment is necessary.
