Osteoarthritis: causes and symptoms

Osteoarthritis is common in sport horses and older animals. The cartilage in the joint absorbs shocks and protects the bones from all friction between them. The degradation of this cartilage, over time or following repeated efforts, leads to debilitating pain. A horse can therefore have joint problems due to internal causes: deficiencies, lack of balance, old age, overweight, etc. However, external causes can also cause osteoarthritis: shocks, sprains, asymmetrical or too much work, too light warm-up, too hard or too soft ground, etc. In these cases, the joint is cold. Osteoarthritis can occur on the entire body of the horse: fetlock, knee, hock and elbow of course, but also shoulder, pelvis, dorsal and cervical vertebrae. Osteoarthritis has more or less the same symptoms as arthritis but the latter is, as its name suggests, an inflammation that is therefore accompanied by fever. The joint is hot and swollen. Arthritis can be a consequence of trauma, a bacterial or viral infection, or of metabolic origin.

Osteoarthritis or arthritis, regardless of the disease involved, symptoms must be detected early. Lameness is of course the main symptom, it is symptomatic of the pain caused by the friction of the bones of the joints. The flexibility of the joint and the locomotor system are compromised, and stiffness occurs. We may also notice swelling or deformity of the animal’s joint and a little fever as part of an inflammation. The joints are painful to the touch. In young horses, fever occurs before lameness, and diarrhoea can also be a sign of deep joint inflammation such as arthritis. It is of course essential to have a veterinarian intervene as soon as possible.
